Did you know?

It was here that Jason, a mythological hero, boarded the ship Argo with his companions, the Argonauts, in quest for the Golden Fleece of Colchis. The seaside street (paralia) of Volos is named after the Argonauts (Argonafton Street). The street parallel to that is named after Jason (Iasonos Street).

Volos

Volos is a beautiful and lively seaside town situated almost halfway between Athens and Thessaloniki. Surrounded by beautiful beaches and with Mount Pelion dominating the scenery, Volos is the heart of a land you don’t want to miss.

Swimming, skiing, scuba diving, trekking, mountain biking, snorkeling and sailing are among your options here. The sea is close and the mountain too! Do you want to take it easy? Volos is famed for its “tsipouradika”, restaurants serving “tsipouro” (a spirit like “ouzo”) and “mezedes” (small dishes, mainly seafood, something like the Spanish tapas). Slow down, choose a tsipouradiko and ask for tsipouro. Relax and enjoy as tsipouro and all sorts of mezedes keep coming. Each round comes along with different mezedes, so you don’t have to worry about choosing. An ideal situation for a relaxed chat, wouldn’t you agree? You are in Volos!

Jason, the Argonauts and the Golden Fleece are part of the mythology (perhaps history) of Volos. A full scale replica of their ship, Argo, was built in 2004-2006 using ancient methods and tools only. Argo set off on a journey to Ithaca on 2008, using oars and sail, 3500 years after the first trip of the ancient Argo. Aboard were 74 modern Argonauts, ordinary people, not athletes. This video tells the tale.

You should also consider visiting Sesklo and Dimini, ancient settlements from the Neolithic and Mycenaean era. Both are a twenty-minute drive from the center of Volos. The Archaeological Museum of Volos, hosting exhibits from both, should come next.

One last thing: in case you care for a stroll in Volos and you're carrying your luggage, we can look after it for you. Walking around light in Volos is quite something, trust us!
